Get the Power in Your Hands

WHY GO SOLAR?

Lower Your Electric Bill

If you live in Kent, CT, you're probably paying too much for power. And you know it. But do you know why your electric bill is so high?

More than half of the electricity we use in Connecticut comes from outside the state, and because it's often travelling over long distances to get to us, it gets hit with various fees and charges along the way. When it finally arrives at your house, some of those charges are passed on to you.

Take a look at your utility bill. You'll see the total cost divided into two sections: supply and delivery. The supply charge is straightforward enough. That's what you owe for the electricity you used.

But the delivery amount (usually itemized on the next page) escapes the attention of many customers. This is what you're paying for things other than the energy you consume. And that amount usually accounts for more than one-third of the total bill - sometimes more than half!

There is good news, however. You don't have to settle for this.

YOUR SOLAR SOLUTION

Eliminate Delivery Charges

With solar panels, the electricity is travelling about 10 feet to get into your home, which eliminates any need for delivery fees. This is why savings are basically guaranteed.

No Purchase Necessary

Getting solar no longer requires purchasing expensive panels. There's now an option to just lease the power the same way you already do from your utility company in Kent.

Potential for Energy Credits

If your panels generate more electricity than you use, the surplus is fed back into the grid. That results in credits that can be redeemed in months when you produce less power.

Get Solar with No Money Down

There was a time when the only way to get solar power for your home was to purchase the panels. That meant spending - or financing - tens of thousands of dollars, which made solar unattainable for many Kent, CT residents.

Now, there's another option. Just get solar power the same way you're currently getting electricity from the utility company.

Obviously, you don't own the system that's bringing power to your home right now. No matter how many years you pay the bills, those poles, transformers and power lines will never belong to you. Someone else owns the electricity and is charging you for what you use (plus delivery fees).

One option for going solar is to allow us to put the panels on your roof. We will own the system and charge you for electricity. And because we have no delivery charges, that means automatic savings!

There are no startup costs or connection fees. You just switch providers and have a lower bill.

Reduce Grid Dependence

Regardless of your political affiliation or beliefs about climate change, we should all agree that our country needs to be less dependent on our electric grid. It's outdated and inefficient, yet Kent and the surrounding communities are reliant on it for a modern lifestyle.

The nation invests millions of dollars into maintenance of the grid every year, and it's predominantly powered by fossil fuels, which will eventually be exhausted. Even more pressing is the possibility that the grid could be compromised by enemies of the U.S. and send much of our population into chaos.

Think about how much we rely on electricity for cooking, refrigeration, air conditioning, internet access and many other things that we consider essential. Imagine what would happen if an entire region of the country lost power for even a few days. This is why renewable energy is so important to the future of Kent.

Prepare for Power Outages with a Solar Battery

Even with solar panels, you're still connected to the grid. So, if the power goes out, your solar system is automatically shut off to prevent the possibility of sending electricity through lines that are being handled by repair technicians.

But with a solar battery, you're not only able to have backup power to prevent the appliances of your choice from being out of commission, but you're also able to recharge that battery when the sun is out.

Own Your Power for Long-Term Savings

Although it's not an option for many customers in Kent, purchasing solar panels is still the best financial solution for those who can afford to do so. It may take several years to pay for them, but if you're going to be in the home long enough, the savings should be even more significant than with a lease program.

And with no prepayment penalty, a lot of families are in position to start seeing those savings in fewer than 10 years.

If you decide to sell your home, those panels are an asset (much like a swimming pool) that increases the home's value and adds to its listing price.

What's the Catch?

Seems really easy to save money with solar, right? You might wonder why everyone isn't doing it.

One answer is that many people don't take the time to learn how it works, so they don't know that savings are virtually automatic. But another issue is that not everyone qualifies. You can't simply decide to sign up for solar. Your home must meet certain requirements.

These include the condition of your roof, the structure of your roof, the amount of direct sunlight it typically gets, and a few other things such as your electric panel having room for more breakers. Your credit score also needs to be decent (typically, above 650).

Ultimately, your solar system would also need to be approved by the utility company that connects you to the grid in Kent, because only so many homes in one area can send power back into it without causing problems for the neighborhood.

Will I Qualify?

When you request a free design report, we begin the process of determining whether you'll qualify for solar. We'll also show you the optimal positions for solar panels on your roof and will take data from your electric bill (your usage and rate over the previous 12 months) to provide a good estimate of your savings.

If you like what you see, we can proceed with a site survey that inspects both your roof and your electrical system and delivers an even more accurate design report. That survey will address some other criteria needed to qualify for solar. If all is in order, then you decide whether to commit to installation of a solar system on your Kent home.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What if I need a new roof?

If you'll soon need a new roof, it's best to do that before installing solar panels. We may be able to help you get a good deal on a new roof in conjunction with panel installation.

Our panels come with a 10-year warranty against leaks in your roof, so we won't install unless we think the roof will hold up for at least that long.

And if you need to replace the roof at some point after installation, it can be done. There's a fee per panel for us to take them down, store them, and then reinstall them when the roof is finished.

  • What if I'll be selling my home soon?

It really depends on how soon you plan to sell. If it's definitely going to be within the next 12 months, then you probably wouldn't save enough money to make it worthwhile if that's your only reason for going solar.

That said, both the National Association of Realtors and Zillow have done research that shows home values increase with solar panels. And many home buyers, especially under the age of 50, like the environmental benefits of the system, not to mention the ability to save on their electric bills from their first month in the new home.

And don't forget that Connecticut has a plan for 40 percent of the state's homes to have solar power by 2030. If we reach even 20 percent by that date, people in Kent will be accustomed to seeing solar panels everywhere, which will likely change the way some people feel about buying a home with solar.

  • What if I'm using a 3rd party for electricity?

This means you already recognize that you're overpaying for electricity with your utility company and have taken a step to do something about it. But it's basically putting a Band Aid on a wound that needs stitches.

Most of the charges that aggravate customers are associated with the delivery of your power. That's not addressed by having a different supplier. Solar is the solution that allows you to escape those delivery fees.

Switching to solar power doesn't infringe upon your agreement with that 3rd-party supplier. You'll continue to get your electricity from that company whenever you don't produce 100 percent of your power through solar panels. Many customers, however, get all of their supply with solar and don't have to pay anyone else for electricity.
